El brazalete de madreperla de mi abuela estuvo guardado en un caj\u00f3n durante a\u00f1os, completamente apagado. Casi calc\u00e1reo. Pens\u00e9 que estaba da\u00f1ado sin remedio. Result\u00f3 que nadie lo hab\u00eda limpiado nunca correctamente. Veinte minutos despu\u00e9s, usando el m\u00e9todo adecuado, aquel brillo iridiscente volvi\u00f3 como nuevo. As\u00ed que si tienes una pieza guardada en alg\u00fan sitio porque parece cansada, aqu\u00ed tienes exactamente c\u00f3mo limpiar la madreperla \u2014 sin estropearla en el proceso.<\/p>\n

Qu\u00e9 es realmente la madreperla y por qu\u00e9 necesita una limpieza cuidadosa<\/h2>\n

La madreperla es el revestimiento iridiscente del interior de ciertas conchas de moluscos. Es la misma sustancia de n\u00e1car que compone las perlas mismas, solo que m\u00e1s plana y a mayor escala. Esa estructura en capas crea el cambiante destello arco\u00edris que ves cuando inclinas una pieza hacia la luz. Una materia realmente hermosa. Pero esa misma estructura es precisamente la raz\u00f3n por la que el cuidado de las joyas de madreperla requiere m\u00e1s atenci\u00f3n que limpiar oro o diamantes.<\/p>\n

\"01.<\/p>\n

El n\u00e1car es relativamente blando comparado con la mayor\u00eda de las piedras preciosas \u2014 m\u00e1s o menos la misma dureza que las perlas. Adem\u00e1s es poroso. Los productos qu\u00edmicos agresivos lo da\u00f1an. El exceso de humedad lo da\u00f1a. Las herramientas abrasivas lo da\u00f1an. Y una vez que el n\u00e1car se raya o se graba qu\u00edmicamente, ya no se puede revertir. Por eso saber c\u00f3mo limpiar la madreperla correctamente desde el primer d\u00eda protege piezas que pueden durar realmente generaciones si las tratas bien.<\/p>\n

C\u00f3mo limpiar piezas de collar de madreperla<\/h2>\n

Para un collar de madreperla, la suavidad siempre gana. Mezcla una cantidad m\u00ednima de jab\u00f3n suave \u2014 el champ\u00fa de beb\u00e9 funciona muy bien \u2014 en un cuenco de agua tibia. Moja un pa\u00f1o suave, esc\u00farrelo hasta que quede solo h\u00famedo. Limpia cada pieza individualmente a lo largo del hilo. No sumerjas todo el collar \u2014 eso arriesga debilitar el hilo que sostiene todo, especialmente en piezas antiguas.<\/p>\n

\"02.<\/p>\n

Una vez que hayas pasado la soluci\u00f3n jabonosa por la superficie, repasa de nuevo con un pa\u00f1o limpio y agua clara para eliminar los residuos. Coloca el collar plano sobre una toalla seca. D\u00e9jalo secar completamente al aire antes de guardarlo. En total lleva unos diez minutos. Es sinceramente el m\u00e9todo m\u00e1s seguro para limpiar un collar de madreperla sin arriesgar el n\u00e1car ni el hilo.<\/p>\n

Limpiar pulseras y otras piezas que se llevan puestas<\/h2>\n

Las pulseras y los anillos perdonan un poco m\u00e1s que los collares enhebrados, ya que no hay hilo que se debilite. El mismo m\u00e9todo con pa\u00f1o h\u00famedo funciona tambi\u00e9n aqu\u00ed. Dedica simplemente m\u00e1s tiempo alrededor de los cierres y engastes donde se acumula la suciedad. Un bastoncillo de algod\u00f3n seco y suave ayuda a llegar a los rincones m\u00e1s estrechos alrededor de las garra sin rayar nada.<\/p>\n

\"03.<\/p>\n

Si la pieza tiene elementos pegados \u2014 madreperla incrustada en un marco sin garra, por ejemplo \u2014, evita completamente el remojo. La humedad debilita el adhesivo con los a\u00f1os de exposici\u00f3n repetida. As\u00ed que para estas piezas, qu\u00e9date con el limpiado con pa\u00f1o en lugar de cualquier remojo, aunque sea breve. S\u00e9cala completamente justo despu\u00e9s de limpiar para reducir el tiempo de exposici\u00f3n a la humedad.<\/p>\n

Productos y herramientas que hay que evitar completamente<\/h2>\n

Algunos productos estropean la madreperla r\u00e1pido y de forma permanente. Evita los limpiadores a base de amon\u00edaco \u2014 descomponen el n\u00e1car qu\u00edmicamente. Evita tambi\u00e9n el vinagre, a pesar de su fama de limpiador natural; la acidez graba la superficie en minutos. La lej\u00eda es un no evidente. Los limpiadores a vapor y los ultras\u00f3nicos para joyas \u2014 ambos buenos para diamantes y oro \u2014 son demasiado agresivos para el n\u00e1car relativamente blando y pueden agrietarlo o delaminarlo.<\/p>\n

\"04.<\/p>\n

Evita tambi\u00e9n los cepillos de dientes y herramientas de fregado abrasivas, incluso las que se anuncian como suaves. Las cerdas crean micro-rayaduras que opacan la superficie con el tiempo, a menudo sin que te des cuenta enseguida. Un pa\u00f1o suave y una limpieza suave con agua manejan realmente todo lo que la madreperla necesita. Cualquier cosa m\u00e1s fuerte resuelve un problema que no existe mientras crea uno que s\u00ed existe.<\/p>\n

Consejos de limpieza de madreperla para el mantenimiento a largo plazo<\/h2>\n

M\u00e1s all\u00e1 de la limpieza propiamente dicha, unos pocos h\u00e1bitos marcan una verdadera diferencia. Apl\u00edcate perfume, laca y crema antes de ponerte las joyas de madreperla \u2014 nunca despu\u00e9s. Esos productos qu\u00edmicos se acumulan en la superficie y opacan el brillo gradualmente. Una bolsita suave o un compartimento forrado funciona bien. Y aqu\u00ed va algo que la mayor\u00eda de la gente no sabe: llevar ocasionalmente la madreperla la ayuda en realidad. Los aceites de la piel ayudan a mantener un sutil brillo, similar a c\u00f3mo las perlas se benefician del uso regular en lugar del almacenamiento permanente. As\u00ed que usa realmente estas piezas.
